I got home late from school Friday night to start chatting with cousin Nora from Germany and before I knew it it was beddy bye time. Saturday morning we did some shopping and then prepared ourselves for the
Charity Ball so again no blogging. I won't miss two days again.
The Charity Ball. As I've told you, Joan belongs to the International Ladies Club...http://www.pilc.sns.pl/...and last night was their 9th Annual Charity Ball at the Piano Bar is Stary Browar. We put on our suits, topcoats, scarves, hats and gloves and went to the bus stop at 6:50PM to get to the Rondo. It was a clear night and about 35 degrees outside so when we got off the bus we decided to make the 15 minute walk to Stary. Half way there we were suprised with a meeting on Niepodległośći street with cousin Magda Kielar who was on her way home. I don't know who was surprised more, Magda or us.
We talked for a few minutes and she told us about the Christmas art and craft exhibition going on at the International Trade Fair Building. It's an event where 400 of Polands arts and crafts people exhibit, for sale, their individual products. We knew about it and plan to go there today. For 5 years in the States Joan and I exhibited our woodworks in such places so we're very familiar with these type Art shows. It will be interesting to view objects now from the buyers point of view instead of the seller :-)
The Charity Ball started at about 8 PM with dinner. The purpose of the Ball is to raise 200,000 zlotych for a special machine for the childrens Cancer hospital. When a child has cancer and needs an MRI done there is an MRI machine but not a machine that regulates the bodily functions during the MRI. That is the machine we want to buy for them. We started the evening already with 50,000 zl donated by a few businesses. Using an auction of art objects donated by Polish and other artists, we were able to raise a little over 100,000 zl more so we almost have enough. Surprisingly, the highest bid item was a European football signed by members of Poland national football team. It sold for 10,ooo zl. Obviously, European football is more popular than art :-)
Dinner was a long affair. Each table had 8 couples seated at it, namecards for each position. Joan sat across from me. I was on the right side of the table end and to my left was Agnieszka Fahland and to Joan's right sat Agnieszka's husband, John. Agnieszka is the lady who introduced Joan into the club. The appetizer was served first, a dish with different greens, figs, tomatoes with mozzarella cheese and loxs. Half an hour later the soup was served. You had your choice of Artichokes Liquor or Fish soup. Joan and I chose the Artichoke. It had an unusual taste :-) Half an hour later the main course of either turkey or lamb with potatoes, mushroom and bread. We chose the lamb. I've never seen such small pieces of lamb before but we were here to raise the money for the machine so I have no complants.
In between the soup and main course a troop of young girls from a ballet school put on a dance exhibition of scenes from a few Broadway productions. Of course, my favorite was the one from the musical "Chicago". :-)
When dinner was over, a DJ started playing disco music to dance to. It was very ironic watching the dance floor, it was filled with wives dancing and all the husbands were at the bar drinking. Like all clubs now, the music was so loud it was impossible to talk with anyone and that was annoying. Joan and I wanted to slow dance with each other but there wasn't a slow, romantic song played.
A raffle was being held, after the dancing, of gifts given by different hotels, artists and businesses. We bought a few tickets earlier but it was already 12:30PM, the music was too loud, we couldn't talk to anyone so we put our names on the back of the tickets and gave them to John. We walked back to the Rondo and learned another lesson of traveling. The busses at night have different numbers than in the daytime so when the first bus arrived, a bus we could have taken, I thought it was the wrong bus. I checked the bus schedule posted and saw the next bus wasn't for another half hour. There was as many people waiting for the night bus as in the day but all were under 30. Our bus finally came and we got home at 1:45AM. It was a long evening but when they deliver that machine to the hospital it will have been worth it.
Wiedzieliśmy o tym i planie by pójść tam dzisiaj.
Byłem na prawa strona stołowego końca i do mojego lewego byłem Agnieszka Fahland i do Joan właściwego usiadłego Agnieszka męża, Johna.
