Munster, Indiana

Another testament to the fact that this is a small world.

I grew up in Hammond, Indiana. the next town south of Hammond is Munster. In Munster there is a Carmelite monastery built by Polish Carmelite friars to serve the Polish community. It was founded by Carmelite friars who served in the Free Polish Army during WWII, emigrated to the U.S. in 1950, and would have emigrated sooner if they hadn't been deported to Siberia in the interim. Small shrines and prayer spots populate the grounds. There's a memorial to the Polish Underground; a shrine (surrounded by barbed wire) to skinny Maximilian Kolbe, the martyr priest of Auschwitz; and another to St Therese of Lisieux, the "Little Flower of Jesus," who is sculpted as she tells her tearful dad that she's off to join the Carmelites.

The biggest structure -- The Grotto of the Holy Mother -- resembles a giant ball of candy popcorn, and shelters three floors of inner shrines. The friars began work on it in 1954. They imported 250 tons of sponge rock from a mine in Arkansas, had people from Chicago come down to clean it, and then painstakingly glued it into place. I visited it many times in my youth and when I met my wife, Joan, I took her there.

Today I met a 73 year old woman from Kobylniki, a titled professor of opthalmology. I spoke with her for two hours and during our conversation she told me about her cousin, a Carmelite friar, who had to leave Poland after the Russian take over and went to.....................................Munster, Indiana. He was one of the founding fathers of the Carmelite Monastery in Munster, the place I have often visited. What a fantastic coincidence!! It's such a small world when we find instances like this to prove it.

On był jednym z ojców założycieli karmelity Klasztoru w Munster, miejscu, które często odwiedziłem. Jaki fantastyczny zbieg okoliczności!! To jest taki mały świat kiedy znajdujemy przykłady w ten sposób by udowodnić to.
