A new president.

We went to bed early and got up at 4AM to watch the results. Already Obama was head in the electoral college and that was good to hear. An hour later he had 338 votes, more than enough to win the presidency. What a great and historical time for America. The last time I can remember such excitement was for John F. Kennedy. Now maybe the country will go in a new direction and regain all it has lost in the last 8 years under the Bush administration. Now our hope is that he remains safe and healthy for the next four years and keeps the promises he has made.

Poszliśmy do łóżka wcześnie i wstaliśmy przy 4AM by obserwować wyniki. Godzina później on miał 338 głosów, więcej niż dość by wygrać prezydenturę.

  5. Is keeping "fingers crossed" a very, very common Polish expression? Yes, we surely use that in English, too, but I got an e-mail from a Polish friend with the exact metaphor -- I have my fingers crossed for you.

And I would very much enjoy knowing what was the process of doing your vote. In a previous blog you mentioned something about that, but didn't give a lot of details. How do ex-pats do this in Poland?

  6. Lori,
It may well be a common expression in Poland but the physical reality is that you do NOT cross your fingers. Instead a fist is made with the thumb on the inside of the fingers.

The process to vote was like this. We went to the Consulate where we were given a registration form for the state we previously lived in, Illinois. After filling them out, they were sent to the U.S. in a diplomatic pouch. A week later we received the "official ballots" where we made our selections for President, Senate and House of Representatives. This was also sent to the U.S. in a diplomatic pouch.
