Fat Thursday

Even with -5C outside, there was a line in front of the Elite pastry shop this morning. Why? Because it's Fat Thursday in Poland today. It's the National Day when millions of pącki are consumed. I hesitate to call them doughnuts because there is no hole in the middle. Instead, the inside is filled with jelly, jam, or some kind of fruit. Observing the tradition, I stood for 15 minutes waiting to buy four of them for Joan and me. Cost 14 PLN($3.75) We ate two after breakfast and we will eat the other two after dinner, Dinner will be that Vegetarian Bulgar Chili.

Early this morning I made the weekly shopping at Carrefour and the old Piotr & Paweł. Cost for the week, 180PLN($49).

Some years ago, during a visit to Golina with Kazia and Andrzej, he introduced me to one of his friends, I was sad to hear last night that the parents and brother of his friend now have coronavirus. They received the vaccination against it 10 days before they had any symptoms.

Nawet przy -5C na zewnątrz, dziś rano przed cukiernią Elite była kolejka. Dlaczego? Ponieważ jest tłusty czwartek w Polsce dzisiaj. W święto narodowe konsumuje się miliony pącków. Waham się, czy nazwać je pączkami, ponieważ w środku nie ma dziury. Zamiast tego wnętrze wypełnione jest galaretką, dżemem lub jakimś owocem. Zgodnie z tradycją stałam przez 15 minut, czekając, żeby kupić cztery z nich dla Joanny i dla mnie. Koszt 14 zł (3,75 $) Zjedliśmy dwie po śniadaniu, a dwie pozostałe po obiedzie, na kolację będzie ta wegetariańska bułgarska chili.

Dziś wczesnym rankiem robiłam cotygodniowe zakupy w Carrefour i starym Piotrze i Pawle. Koszt za tydzień 180 zł (49 dolarów).

Kilka lat temu, podczas wizyty w Golinie z Kazią i Andrzejem, przedstawił mnie jednemu ze swoich znajomych, ze smutkiem usłyszałem wczoraj wieczorem, że rodzice i brat jego przyjaciela mają teraz koronawirusa. Otrzymali szczepionkę przeciwko temu 10 dni przed wystąpieniem jakichkolwiek objawów.

Incluso con -5C afuera, esta mañana había una fila frente a la pastelería Elite. ¿Por qué? Porque es Jueves Gordo en Polonia hoy. Es el Día Nacional en el que se consumen millones de pącki. Dudo en llamarlos donas porque no hay un agujero en el medio. En cambio, el interior está lleno de gelatina, mermelada o algún tipo de fruta. Observando la tradición, me quedé 15 minutos esperando para comprar cuatro de ellos para Joan y para mí. Costo 14 PLN ($ 3.75) Comimos dos después del desayuno y comeremos los otros dos después de la cena, la cena será ese chile búlgaro vegetariano.

Esta mañana temprano hice las compras semanales en Carrefour y en el antiguo Piotr & Paweł. Costo por semana, 180PLN ($ 49).

Hace unos años, durante una visita a Golina con Kazia y Andrzej, me presentó a uno de sus amigos, me entristeció escuchar anoche que los padres y el hermano de su amigo ahora tienen coronavirus. Recibieron la vacuna contra él 10 días antes de que presentaran algún síntoma.
