Pendleton.

 6C is not that bad. Joan's daughter. last Sunday, said it was -25F(-32C) in Chicago as we were talking via Skype with her. I remember temperatures like that living in the U.P.  Even temperatures like that were not too bad if you were dressed for it. We always wore long, thermal underwear, heavy pants, a down-filled coat, a warm hat, -60 Sorrell boots, and heavy gloves. Those red-plaid pants in the picture were old, thick solid wool, and I could sit in the snow and still be warm. I bought them at the St. Vinnie's store in Marquette for $5. Any time I would have to make a trip into the nearby town, I always made a stop there to see what somebody had donated for sale. It was my favorite shopping place. 

My favorite shirts were made by the Pendleton company. Pendleton was founded in 1863 when British weaver Thomas Kay sailed to Oregon in the US to set up his own wool mill. His eldest daughter Fannie took over and in 1909 she established a trade deal with America’s indigenous communities to produce blankets, robes, and shawls. Over 100 years later, the business is still family-run and deeply connected to the Native American population. Made mostly from wool sourced from the US, the designs are put through a number of complex steps including carding, spinning, and weaving, as well as the label’s state-of-the-art dye technology. They are durable and unique. In 1960, a little-known singing group known as the Pendletones was formed, taking their name from the classic Pendleton wool plaid shirt. This group later changed their name to the Beach Boys and the Pendleton shirt became popular among American youth.

As of 2019, the company is privately held and under the management by the 5th generation heirs of Thomas Kay. John Bishop, great-great-grandson of Thomas Kay, is president and CEO. Great-great-grandson Peter Bishop is the Executive VP of Merchandising and Design. The company operates seven facilities and 41 retail stores. Pendleton products are sold in the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan, and Korea.

The company headquarters are in Portland, Oregon. The original mills in Pendleton, Oregon, and Washougal, Washington, are among the few woolen mills in operation in the United States today, and Pendleton woolen fabrics and blankets are still woven in these Pacific Northwest mills.

Just for the heck of it, I checked their website and was not surprised to see the price of similar shirts like Joan and I have, $99-140 per shirt for one shirt. They are still made from pure virgin wool in their American mills. I paid $2 per used shirt in St. Vinnies in 1978. I have to thank my father for showing me the value of these shirts.

Siempre llevábamos ropa interior larga y térmica, pantalones gruesos, un abrigo de plumón, un gorro caliente, botas Sorrell de -60 y guantes gruesos. Esos pantalones rojos de la foto eran viejos, de lana gruesa y sólida, y podía sentarme en la nieve y seguir estando caliente. Los compré en la tienda St. Vinnie's de Marquette por 5 dólares. Siguen estando hechas de pura lana virgen en sus fábricas americanas. Yo pagaba 2 dólares por camisa usada en St. Vinnies en 1978. Tengo que agradecer a mi padre que me enseñara el valor de estas camisas.
