79 years ago, on this day, December 7th, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Force launched a surprise attack on the United States Naval Base in Pearl Habor, Honolulu just before 8:00 in the morning.. The attack led to the United States' formal entry into World War II. Of the eight U.S. Navy battleships present, all were damaged, with four sunk. All but the USS Arizona were later raised, and six were returned to service and went on to fight in the war.  A total of 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed; 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded.  Each year on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Survivors, veterans, and visitors from all over the world come together to honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
