Buk 'n' back

Niepruszewo manor house.

Cieśle manor house

We took a little trip to the town of Buk. It's a place about 22km west of Poznań. An interesting drive through several smaller towns, two small forests and then we arrived. It's a typical small town with little winding streets, lots of new houses being built, main street but not many people walking around. On the way back we decided to take a little detour to the towns of Niepruszewo and Ciesle. For me, these were actually more interesting because each had an old, unoccupied manor house at the end of them. The one in Niepruszewo had a stone wall all around the considerable grounds. The wrought iron gate had a padlocked chain on it that was rusted with age. These old manor houses facinate me. I can easily imagine the days when they were occupied by some rich landowner with his family. Past Niepruszewo, about two km, is the village of Ciesle. The old road that takes you there passes by a large lake and then the village appears. It is very small, maybe 10 houses in all but at the end of the road sits the manor house. It was also unoccupied for some time but the walls around the property are still in tact and the house still looks good. Unfortunately, we left home without the camera so I could not take pictures this time but I will return there at some time. The pictures you see were taken by someone else. This is the value of a car for me. To take these little roads to little villages or towns to find these old manor houses. For me, a manor house is similar to a mansion in America. There are so many of them in Poland, I could spend a lifetime finding them all. It is a pity they are not all restored to their former splendor. If I have a fantasy, it would be to buy one of them and restore it but that is way beyond our financial possibility. Still, I am a romantic and what could be more rewarding than to restore a house to it's former beauty.

There is a couple in Poland who spend a lot of time travelling around Poland taking pictures of castles, manor houses, palaces and churches. I would highly recommend looking at their website if you have any interest is seeing some incredible buildings in Poland. Their website is at

Zrobiliśmy trochę podróży do miasta Buk. By wziąć te małe drogi do małych wsi albo miast by znaleźć te stare dworki.

  1. You must come to see me in July when I'm at Reymontowka and you will see a manor house alive with 80 kids!! The history of many manor homes is that their owners were imprisoned by the Communist government for the crime of owning the house. When these persons were released from prison they were impoverished and didn't have the resources to care and restore the house. There is an association in Poland that has the goal of restoring and maintaining manor houses. In 2006 this group had a meeting in Siedlce and then came to visit Reymontowka.

Reymontowka is a thriving place because someone in the local government had the vision to begin to save it and use it a center for culture and science.

In a nearby village where I have taught, there is a small palace that is totally unrestored. People tell me after WWII it first served as the village school. Then when a school was built, it served as the home for the teachers' families. Now it is empty, supposedly owned by an Italian who is going to restore it. Well, after 3 years, I've seen nothing yet towards helping this pretty little building.
