Up this morning at 8AM and downstairs to have the typical
Polish breakfast of yogurt, cheese, ham, salami, fresh breads plus assorted
fruits. Since it was 25c we also had coffee and then took our camera and
departed for Ksi膮z castle.
Our trip started along the familiar route 3 through the
mountains with its winding and curvy road leading to route 5 which would take
us back into Poland. We continued on 5 toward Wroc艂aw until we came upon route
34 south to the castle. The road was well marked so we had no trouble finding
it
This castle is huge. The entrance in front is where the parking is, reasonably priced at 3 zl per hour. We arrived at 11AM and left at 3PM so parking cost was 12zl. When your car is parked you enter the grounds of the castle through a large entrance and immediately the front of the castle is visible although the total size is unknown at first sight. It was originally built as a defensive fortress at the end of the thirteenth century by the Polish prince Bolko 1. The castle, called “The key to Silesia”, was of great strategic importance protecting the trade routes from Silesia to Bohemia. Over the enturies the castle had several owners and the castle was badly destroyed by the Germans in World War 2. Inmates from Gross-Rosen concentration camp were made to build two hollow tunnels which were believed to be used for weapon manufacture or chemical laboratories. We saw the tunnels and, strangely, we were left alone in these tunnels where I took pictures of uniforms for Polish prisoners.
The most beautiful of the rooms are in the old part of the
castle although the Maximillian room in the front of the castle is considered
to be the most beautiful. It is very
ornate, large in size and was used to greet arriving guests. Certainly, in the
old part of the castle it is easy to imagine yourself back in those days. This castle is huge. The entrance in front is where the parking is, reasonably priced at 3 zl per hour. One of the things Joan and I both like very much was the
furniture, especially the woodworking and intarsia pieces. The craftsmanship
was so accurate that it is impossible to see how these pieces could have been
created back in those days without machinery.
After visiting the palace rooms, the terraces and walking
around on the grounds we went to the stable where there is collection of about
200 horses and one complete stable filled with carriages from the old days.We left Ksi膮z and started back to our room but it was still early so we decided to stop in Bolk贸w and see the castle there. We didn’t know that today there was a huge Goth music festival going on at the castle and when we got to Bolk贸w we were amazed to see hundreds of young people all dressed in black with all sorts of costumes for this kind of event. We decided it wasn’t a good time to visit the castle and went back to our room.
Poniewa偶 by艂o 25c my r贸wnie偶 mieli艣my kaw臋 i wzi膮艂 nasz膮 kamer臋 i uda艂 si臋 do Zamku Ksi膮偶.
Nasza podr贸偶 rozpocz臋艂a si臋 wzd艂u偶 znanej trasy 3 przez g贸ry z jej uzwojenia i dr贸g prowadz膮cych do trasy curvy 5, kt贸ry zabierze nas z powrotem do Polski. Droga by艂a dobrze oznaczona wi臋c nie mieli艣my problem贸w ze znalezieniem go.
Doszli艣my do 11AM i lewo na 3PM tak koszt parkowania to 12z艂. Zamek, zwany "kluczem do 艢l膮ska", by艂 wielkim znaczeniu strategicznym chroni膮cej szlak贸w handlowych ze 艢l膮ska do Czech. Wi臋藕niowie z Gross-Rosen obozu koncentracyjnego zosta艂y wykonane budow臋 dw贸ch wydr膮偶onych tuneli, kt贸re by艂y uwa偶ane by膰 wykorzystane do produkcji broni lub laboratoriach chemicznych. Widzieli艣my tunele i, co dziwne, zostali艣my sami w tych tunelach, gdzie zrobi艂em zdj臋cia mundury dla polskich wi臋藕ni贸w.
To jest bardzo ozdobny, du偶ych rozmiar贸w i by艂 u偶ywany na powitanie go艣ci przybywaj膮cych. Oczywi艣cie, w starej cz臋艣ci zamku 艂atwo jest wyobrazi膰 sobie siebie w tamtych czasach.
Jedn膮 z rzeczy, Joan i ja bardzo lubi臋 to meble, zw艂aszcza drewna i Intarsia sztuk.
Wyszli艣my Ksi膮偶u i zacz膮艂 z powrotem do naszego pokoju, ale by艂o jeszcze wcze艣nie, wi臋c zdecydowali艣my si臋 zatrzyma膰 w Bolkowie i zobacz zamku. Nie wiedzieli艣my, 偶e dzisiaj by艂 wielki festiwal muzyki Goth dzieje si臋 na zamku, a kiedy dotarli艣my do Bolkowa byli艣my zdumieni widz膮c setki m艂odych ludzi, wszyscy ubrani na czarno z wszelkiego rodzaju kostiumy dla tego rodzaju imprezy. Zdecydowali艣my, 偶e nie by艂 to dobry czas, by odwiedzi膰 zamek i wr贸ci艂 do naszego pokoju.
