Night of Flamenco.

Last night we went to the Pena Flamenco club in Estepona with 5 other people for dinner and to watch the live performance of flamenco. We got there an hour ahead of time and had an excellent table almost in front of the stage. Collectively we ordered five different kinds of food and shared it along with some red wine. The place was very noisy with conversations but once the guitarist and the singer sat down on the stage chairs, it became quiet. They were joined by a male and female flamenco dancer who were also excellent. I tried to take pictures but again the camera wasn't responsive to the dark so they didn't take. However, I was able to make two videos of some of the performance that came out visible and I put them on the blog for you to get a little sample of what we saw. Joan was thrilled with the performances and said she had never experienced anything like that before. I had seen it several times, 50 years ago and the big difference for me was that the woman didn't use castanets, she only snapped her fingers. Even with that slight difference, the show was good and we stayed for two performances. For me it was interesting to watch the guitarists because he was only watching the feet of the dancers in order to know how to support their moves with his playing. You probably won't understand anything the singer is singing but the most important thing about flamenco is the emotion emitted by the singer and the dancers.

Earlier we visited the shop where our two hosts owned a book store for 34 years but are retired now and rent it out.to another person who carries on the tradition they started. Their last name is Longman and the new owner kept the name because it is so well recognized in the Estepona community. She just changed the name to the New Longman's Bookstore. It's located in a secluded plaza that they often used for different events sponsored by the store.
