Polish taxes done.

Sometimes in life you meet some very unique people, people who do something out of the kndness of their hear instead of money. We were fortunate to meet two people like that when we had the problem with NFZ. When we told them our story they couldn't believe it and offered to help us with advise. They are both lawyers/tax advisers. They told us what to do to correct the problem and said when it became tax time they would also fill out the forms for us so there wouldn't be a problem at the tax office. We met with them today and they have everything done, we just needed to sign the forms and pay the additional tax. They asked for no fees, no bill was presented to us and Joan and I wanted to give them something as a statement of our gratitude but they refused our offer. They said just being able to help us was enough payment for our work. Can you imagine that, lawyers who worked for free? There is an additional tax sum we must pay because, evidently, the tax office did not take out enough money from our account and we will pay it before we submit our tax forms this week. At least it is over for now and only filing our U.S. tax papers need to be done before June 15th. That is the absurd part, paying taxes to two countries when you only live in one.

Feeling good after our meeting and great weather outside, we stopped for coffee in the rynek and are very distraught over the changes this year. We counted a total of ten restaurants that no longer have outside cafes in the rynek. Our favorite place has dramatically changed and so we will seek another place when we want to go outside to a café.  It's a pity because we really liked sitting in the rynek and watching the people. I'm sure we will find another location in Poznań that we will start frequenting but the rynek has lost it's charm for us due to the new changes imposed by the city council. I hope that by the end of the season business has fallen off by so much that they repeal the changes.

  1. Not accepting, or demanding, adequate compensation or services and labor, is one of the social remnants of the communist legacy. Meager pay was and is still accepted in many businesses for laborers just happy to have work. This is one of the reasons many western corporations have set up shop in Poland. Stable relative corruption free business environment, subservient ethical and educated working class, and low wages, perfect place to business.
