The Wedding

Woke up Saturday morning to a bright sunny day and dry roads. At 10:30AM we started our drive to Połczyn Zdroj for the wedding. The route was easy to remember, highway 11 north to Szczecinek and then 172 west to Połczyn. When we reached Chodziez it was a little colder and all of the trees and bushed were frosted. It looked beautiful.

We arrived early, 1:30PM and first found the little church was the wedding was to be held. It's on the east side of the town next to the cemetery. Looking through the church glass windows it looked like it would hold about 100 people and had heaters on the sides of the walls. We were happy to see that because many of the churches in Poland have no heat. At -5 celsius outside we weren't looking forward to sitting in a cold church for an hour.

From there we drove to the hotel in the center of town, the Leo Karli. It's an old palace that was converted into a hotel/health sanitorium some years ago. We were walking into the hotel when someone from behind said "Hello cousin". I turned around and saw cousin Elzbieta who had also just arrived for the wedding. Inside we went to the reception desk, checked in and were given keys to our room. It was on the third floor so we walked up one flight of stairs, then down a hallway that had an overhead view of the reception hall. Up another flight of stairs and at the end of another hallway was our room. The heat hadn't been turned on yet so we turned it up as high as it would go. We were already in our clothes for the wedding but brought a suitcase with a change of clothes for the drive home on Sunday. We waited until 3:20PM and then drove back to the church but at 3:30PM it still wasn't opened. More people started arriving and finally at 3:45PM the church was opened and, much to everyone's dismay, there was no heat. So for the next hour everyone was freezing, especially poor Artur and Magda who wore no coats. Everyone else had coats, scarves and gloves on, even the priest under his tunic.

In front of the little altar were 2 rows of 2 seats for the bride and groom and behind them the bestman and bride's maid. The last two wore coats and gloves. During the service they sit on chairs except for the ring ceremony, communion and wedding mass. Krzysztof Kupiński, the bestman and the brides mother all read little "Best wishes for your marriage" messages. At the end of the ceremony the bride and groom signed documents for the marriage.

The wedding over, we were all happy to get back to the WARM hotel to the reception. Joan had to change her boots for high heels so we missed the giving of bread and salt to the newlyweds. A reception line had already formed for greeting the new couple and giving your present to them. The brides maid stood next to the bride and took everything while Magda and Artur kissed and hugged each individual. Once all had been greeted, we sat down at the table with cousin Krzysztof and Wiesia Kupińscy and her mother, cousin Elzbieta, her mother and her son Victor.

The first thing we all did was stand up, with a shot of Vodka in hand, sang Sto Lat and drank the vodka. Unfortunately for me that was just the beginning of the Vodka. I am not a frequent drinker of alcohol but on this occassion I consumed far more than I should have.

Supper began with chicken soup, then another Sto Lat toast. That was followed by salads, cutlets, bread, potatoes, pyzy and fish. Another Sto Lat. Someone suggested a glass of wine after dinner. Why not? Another lesson that I learned further into the evening.....don't drink vodka and wine together.

Dinner was over and then the dancing began with the first dance by the new couple. Everyone was dancing, even Joan and I. I'm not a good dancer but Joan loves to dance so I just had to stumble around the floor with her. I'm not sure what time the party actually ended but by midnight I had enough of the bad combination of alcohol and Joan and I said our goodbyes and went to bed.

Thinking that we had to check out of our rooms at 11AM, we got up at 10:30AM, put on our traveling clothes and walked down the hallway overlooking the reception hall. I looked down and say cousin Krzysztof sitting at a table with his sister Urszula, mother of Artur. Other people were walking into the hall and then I realized that there must be a wedding breakfast. We were packed and ready to go although I must admit I was still feeling the effects of the night before. We met Krzysztofs' family in the hall and they asked why we weren't coming to the breakfast. I said we were ready to leave, said goodbye to them and took our luggage out to the car. As I was putting our suitcase in I heard someone calling my name. I turned around and there was Urszula standing at the doorway of the hotel. She told I couldn't leave without coming to the breakfast so Joan and I returned with her to the hall. I'm glad we did. Two cups of coffee, beef stroganoff, ham, eggs, bread, pastries and tea made the world of difference in how I felt.

So now we said goodbye again, got in the car and started home. The weather was drastically different that yesterday. Foggy, snow on the roads and gray everywhere. Going at a slower speed we still made it home in 3 1/2 hours.

Budzony soboty ranek do jasno słoneczny dzień i suche drogi. O 10:30AM zaczęliśmy naszą przejażdżkę do Połczyn Zdroj dla ślubu. Szlak był łatwy by zapamiętać, droga 11 północy do Szczecinek i wtedy 172 zachód do Połczyn. Kiedy osiągnęliśmy Chodziez to był trochę zimniejszy i wszystkie z drzew i obsadzony krzakami był oszroniony. To wyglądało piękny.

Stamtąd popędziliśmy do hotelu w środku miasta, Lwa Karli. Wewnątrz my poszedł do recepcji, zarejestrował się i byli dany klucze do naszego pokoju.

Poprzednie dwa nosiły płaszcze i rękawiczki.

Ślub wszędzie, byliśmy wszyscy szczęśliwi by otrzymać z powrotem do CIEPŁEGO hotelu do przyjęcia. Joan musiała zamienić jej buty na wysokie obcasy tak chybiliśmy dawania chleba i słony do nowożeńców. Linia przyjęcia już tworzyła dla powitania nowej pary i dawanie twojego prezentu do nich. Dziewczyna panien młodych stanęła obok panny młodej i wzięła wszystko podczas gdy Magda i Artur pocałował się i ściskał każdego osobnika.

Każdy tańczył, nawet Joan i ja.

Byliśmy zapakowani i gotowy by pójść chociaż muszę przyznać, że jeszcze czułem efekty nocy przedtem. Spotkaliśmy rodzinę Krzysztofs′ w sali i oni poprosili dlaczego nie przychodziliśmy do śniadania.

Powiedziałem, że jesteśmy gotowi by wyruszyć, powiedzieliśmy pożegnanie do nich i wyjęliśmy nasz bagaż do samochodu.

  1. Glad you made it through your first wesele without too many problems, and mostly a very good time!

Maybe this is only done for American volunteers, but I have good luck in asking for maly prosze (my computer doesn't write Polish) when the vodka goes around.

Last summer I was so lucky. We were having a bonfire back in the space for this. This is a covered area for outdoor events, and has a small stage on one end. The lights weren't on, the sodas were on the stage. I went up to get one, was concentrating on how to get the top off the bottle, talking to someone and walked right off the stage.

This was about a 10 inch drop. I started off forwards and somehow ended up on my back. And almost before I landed two men were right beside me to pick me up. I felt so dumb after doing this because the summer before I had taught there, and had two weeks of practice of walking around a table on the stage without falling off the stage.

I was so lucky that I hadn't broken a wrist or done anything like that. However, the next day I surely felt everywhere in my body as if I had walked off a stage the night before. I was taking Advil big time, and so didn't want to mix all that with vodka at a staff/volunteer event. Maly proze worked very well.

    Hi David and Joan....
It looks like...."and a good time was had by all"....my kind of wedding! a "shot" here...a "shot" there!!!!!! It looks like it was a beautiful wedding, even though the church was cold. The reception looked like lots of fun and everyone was dressed so nice.
What a wonderful experience for you both and especially that it was a relative. I think even a closer relative to me. David, as always, I enjoyed the detailed wedding description....and the slide show. Thank you.
    Hugs,
    Marilyn

  3. Marilyn,
Masz rację! You're right. Artur is from the Rajewski side of family and I believe a good time was had by all. There's another Rajewski wedding in April but we won't attend because it's being held in Spain.
