Festival of St. Martin

Tomorrow is a day of celebration in Poznań. We have guests coming in the late afternoon but we are going to see a little of this festival before then, if it isn't raining all day.

Today we went for our week's food shopping at King Cross. It was a cold walk but it was not raining. I bought a new kielbasa I had not seen before, we will try it tonight. Joan stopped at the vegetable store and bought some broccoli, tomatos and lettuce. This week we spent 140 zl for food ($54).

November 11th is a national festival in Poland. Polish people celebrate the Day of Independence Recapture. Poznanians have additional opportunity to celebrate. Poznań is probably the only city that celebrate the name’s day of its main Street – St. Martin’s. Every year thousands of Poznań inhabitants march in a colourful parade through St. Martin Street. They are led by Saint Martin who sits on a white horse.On this special day Poznanians treat themselves with traditional St. Martin’s croissants – or horseshoe – shaped pastry. This tradition is kept alive exclusively in Poznań. Therefore, the sweet delicacy is one of the most characteristic symbols of Wielkopolska.Every year local bakers sell a few hundred tons of the croissants.
