We've been having a problem understanding explanations for grammar rules and lesson instructions given on lessons from our teacher. She speaks only in Polish, and while I understand that is the method used in teaching a foreign language, we often have left our class a little frustrated. We assumed the 3 other students didn't have the same problem and understood what she says. Tonight I talked with them and they have the same problem. We talked amongst ourselves to find a solution and the only thing we came up with was to tell the teacher our dilema. So, after our break, I told the teacher our problem. She reaffirmed that teaching in Polish was necessary but agreed to give explanations in English also. I think we will make better progress now.
Last night I had a nice converstion on MSN Instant Messenger with cousin Kazia Juszczak. It is much easier for me to write in Polish than to speak in Polish so conversing is easier on IM. Kazia is the cousin who answered my first letter to Poland, some 6 years ago, and since that time we have developed a very good relationship. If there was a house for sale in Golina, where she lives, I could easily live there, just to be near her. She gave me a new soup recipe and we would have made it today but we still have Żurek left from yesterday that we ate today so tomorrow we will try the new soup. We didn't have all of the ingredients so this morning I walked, early, to Real to buy what we needed. King Cross mall is already decorated for Christmas and the little kiosks have many Christmas items for sale. When we left America we gave away all of our Christmas decorations so we will have to buy new ones. I don't think we will have a Christmas tree in our flat this year because it is small and there is not place for it but next year we hope to have a house and a tree for Christmas.
The way to the mall is littered with garbage, just like in America. I thought that I should organize some people to clean it up but without the language skills it would be hard to do. Litter is everywhere in the world, not just in America.
I've said this before but it still amazes me. Today, on an overcrowded bus, a young man stood up from his seat and gave it to Joan.
Mieliśmy problemowi zrozumiejącemu objaśnienia dla reguł gramatyki i instrukcji lekcji reportowanych lekcje od naszego nauczyciela. Ona mówi tylko w po polsku, i podczas gdy rozumiem, który jest metoda używana w nauczaniu języka obcego, często zostawiliśmy naszą klasę trochę {mały} frustrował {udaremniał}. Przyjęliśmy 3 inni studenci nie mieli tego samego problemu i zrozumieli co ona mówi. Dzisiaj wieczorem powiedziałem z nimi i oni mają ten sam problem. Powiedzieliśmy pośród siebie by znaleźć rozwiązanie i jedyną rzecz, którą znaleźliśmy mieli powiedzieć nauczycielowi nasz dilema. Więc, po naszej przerwie, powiedziałem nauczycielowi nasz problem. Ona potwierdziła, że uczące po polsku była konieczna ale zgodziła się dać objaśnienia po angielsku też. Myślę, że będziemy robić lepszy postęp teraz.
Ubiegłej nocy miałem miłą rozmowę na MSN Nagłym Posłańcu z kuzyna Kazia Juszczak. To jest dużo łatwiejszy dla mnie by wpisać język polski niż by mówić po polsku tak rozmawianie jest łatwiejsze na IM. Kazia jest kuzyn, który odpowiedział na mój pierwszy list do Polski, kilka 6 lat temu, i od tamtego czasu rozwinęliśmy bardzo dobre stosunki. Jeżeli był dom na sprzedaż w Golina, gdzie ona żyje, mógłbym łatwo żyć tam, właśnie by być blisko niej. Ona dała mi nową receptę zupy i zrobilibyśmy to dzisiaj ale jeszcze każemy Żurek opuszczać od wczoraj, że zjedliśmy dzisiaj tak jutro spróbujemy nową zupę. Nie mieliśmy wszystkich ze składników tak dzisiaj rano chodziłem, wcześnie, do Rzeczywistego by kupić co my potrzebny.
Król Krzyżują strefa dla pieszych jest już dekorowana dla Bożego Narodzenia i małe kioski mają dużo Bożego Narodzenia pozycji na sprzedaż. Kiedy opuściliśmy Amerykę wydaliśmy wszystkie z naszych Bożego Narodzenia ozdób tak będziemy musieli kupić nowe jedne. Nie myślę, że będziemy mieć choinkę w naszym mieszkaniu tego roku ponieważ to jest małe i tam nie jest miejsce dla tego ale przyszły rok spodziewamy się mieć dom i drzewo na Boże Narodzenie.
Droga do strefy dla pieszych jest podściełana ze śmieciami, właśnie jak w Ameryce. Pomyślałem, że powinienem zorganizować kilku ludzi by sprzątać to ale bez umiejętności języka to byłoby twarde by czynić. Śmieci są wszędzie w świecie, nie właśnie w Ameryce.

ReplyDeleteIt struck me as quite odd that you teacher insists to use only Polish, especially if we take into account she does grammar with you. I've been learning foreign language methodology and I believe personally that this method may be of any use only when the students are at least on the intermediate level. With grammar, it is even harder. The complex grammar simply cannot be taught if the student can't even understand the language well.
It's a good decision to ask your teacher to give some explanations in English. She may have your best interest at heart, trying to make you actually use more complex language, but I believe there's plenty of possibilities to use language outside grammar. Oh well, I guess she tried to use one of those new teaching methods. Never liked them very much. :)

To bardzo dziwne, że Wasza nauczycielka nalega, aby używać tylko polskiego, zwłaszcza jeżeli weźmiemy pod uwagę, że przerabia z wami gramatykę. Uczyłem się metodologii nauczania obcych języków i osobiście uważam, że takiej metody nauczania można używać dopiero, gdy uczniowie są przynajmniej na poziomie średnio zaawansowanym. Z gramatyką idzie o wiele trudniej. Nie da się nauczyć skomplikowanych zasad gramatyki, jeśli uczniowie nawet nie znają dobrze języka.
Dobrze, że poprosiliście waszą nauczycielkę o wyjaśnienia po angielsku. Pewnie bardzo zależy jej na szybkich postępach, gdy próbuje zmusić was do używania trudniejszego języka, ale sądzę, że można się wiele nauczyć, nie skupiając się tylko na gramatyce.
No tak, przypuszczalnie wasza nauczycielka próbowała używać jednej z tych nowoczesnych metod nauczania. Nigdy ich za bardzo nie lubiłem.

She said that "even if we understood only 10% of what she said in class it was more important for us to hear the language spoken and this method was used in all foreign languages. Young children don't have explanations when they are learning and they learn quickly. I understand as adults it is more difficult for you because you want everything explained so I will speak in English sometime". But of course, we are already programmed in our native tongue so it IS more difficult for us.

Młode dzieci nie mają objaśnień kiedy oni uczą się i oni uczą się szybko. Rozumiem jak dorosłe, które to jest trudniejsze dla ciebie ponieważ chcesz wszystkiego wyjaśniony tak będę mówić w po angielsku kiedyś". Ale oczywiście, jesteśmy już zaprogramowani w naszej mowie ojczystej tak to JEST trudniejsze dla nas. Jak znalazłeś mój blog?

ReplyDeleteI can tell you I experience the same thing when I came to US. I grow up in Poland, went to school and college and even was teaching in college for 5 years. I learn English taking special courses and then I had classes in college, but nothing can ever prepare you for immersion in foreign language when you came to new place to live. Thanks to my co workers who were very patient with me and help me all along and being able to read a lots of books in English I was able to master the language. I agree with Maciej, new methods are not always as good as they say that they are. My biggest success is the fact that I over past 2 years I wrote the manuals for all the test at the place where I work now. There were very few problems with my grammar and sentence construction. The manuals had to be written in such a format that any new worker will be able to use them without to much problem. You will be able to master the language since you had some earlier preparation for it and you are attending classes to help you move along. Try to read Polish books and newspapers and listen to the radio a lot, that helps the most - you can hear how words sound and since you play instruments that also helps.

Ja chodzilam do szkly w Polsce, skonczylam tam studia i nwet pracowalam na uniwersytecie przez 5 lat.
