Sadness!

Every now and then I get a reader of my blog asking questions about how we made the move to Poland like what we had to do, problems encountered, etc. As we correspond we form a little bond and if I'm lucky I get to actually meet him or her when they come to visit. That was the case some years ago when John Rudiak and his Polish born wife, Helena, came. This was especially interesting for me because Helena came from the village of Przyma, the place where my grandfather was born. Over the last several years they told us of their plan to build a house there and one day to move here and spend at least half of their time in Poland. They selected their house plan, bought land across from Helena's sister and waited while the house was built to completion. Last year it was and they invited us to visit them and see the house. It was a beautiful house and they loved it. They were ready to start sharing their lives living between the U.S. and Poland. They had an adult daughter, Natalia, who was active in the Pittsburg society so it was only natural that they would live part-time in both countries. Shortly after their visit last year, John informed us that Helena had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was in a battle for her life. As is usual with this type of cancer, it progressed and Helena begin to suffer. Yesterday, Helena lost the battle and died, leaving behind John and her daughter, Natalia. She will be cremated in America and her ashes brought back to Poland to be buried in the cemetery in Golina next to her mother. Helena was a beautiful person, always smiling, always willing to help and our time with her will never be forgotten. Even though she will no longer be with us in her physical body, the memories we have of her will live as long as we do and she won't be forgotten. On each Nov. 1st we will put flowers and candles on her grave just like we do for my relatives. We will do this to honor her and the friendship developed while she lived.

Zrobimy to, aby ją i przyjaźń opracowany podczas żyła cześć.

  1. Thank you for the beautiful story. Service will be held in Sw. Jakub Church in Golina in the coming few weeks. We are all extremely saddened by her passing but also remember her beauty, kindness, and compassion. We loved her so much. She was only 61 years young and had so much to look forward to as we planned our retirement since she came to America at 23.

Sorry to read about the passing of your friend. After reading your post, I read her obituary in the Pittsburgh paper since I am from there and frequently check the obits. She did not live far from where I grew up. Small world. Way too young to be gone.
