Our destination was 1 1/2 hours away, according to GogleMaps but GPS had a different idea, mainly because of the construction for the road connecting Pozna艅 to Wroc艂aw. It actually took a little over two hours to get there but worth the trip.
Known as a baroque pearl, it is often called by foreigners Polish Eskurial remains one of the most underrated monuments, although it is firmly rooted in Polish history and tradition. It's an impressive diamond of Lower Silesia and has a colorful history. In the 20th century it was a subject of interest to the Nazis and the Red Army of Russia devastated it. It was turned into a psychiatric hospital and was visited by Hitler and Michael Jackson.
The monastery consists of a Basilica built on the ruins of a 12th century Roman church. There is an palace for the Abbot, The church of St. James and out buildings. It if was in Warsaw and properly restored, it could easily compete with the Royal Castle. The history of this place begins in 1150 with the Benedictine monks. Unfortunately, 650 years later, Prussia took power, removed the monks and 500 valuable paintings along with sculptures and musical instruments. By 1950 it had no owner and the state was not interested in it. In 1989 a Foundation Lubiaz was established. It relies only on itself to save this great piece of Polish history and we were happy to pay the entrance fee.
When we were done, it was almost time for dinner and since we were kind of close to Wroc艂aw we went there to eat and then back to the center for Joan to rest. She had a great day!
