Beware!

Talking about bizarre things...............A law to give pedestrians the right of way at zebra crossings in Poland has failed. A senate resolution rejected the amendment to the law on road traffic, with 197 for, 217 against, and 24 abstaining.
Wait a very long time, then run like hell
The hard-to-believe fact (for foreigners) is that in Poland, a pedestrian at a crossing does not have right of way and must wait for all cars to pass before they can enter the crossing. The "logic" behind the disapproval....The main arguments against the law change were that Polish drivers are used to driving across pedestrian crossings without pause and could not handle the change of becoming “responsible to stop”, and that many crossings would need upgrading for visibility.. Talk about total stupidity!!

As you can tell, I bought a new t-shirt. It should really say "Born in America with Polish Roots" and the U.S.flag colors above the Polish colors. but this is as close as I could get.

  1. In and around Konin, motorists stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. I always do there and other countries. Seems bizarre in a country mandating headlights in the daytime, 50 km/hr in questionable zones with camera enforcement, that pedestrians, young with children, elderly, school children, etc. would not be considered a safety risk. I think this will be revisited soon.

  2. Several years ago I saw a T-shirt or sweatshirt at the White Eagle Restaurant in Niles, Illinois that did say "Born in America with Polish roots."

  3. I was equally startled when I lived in Hungary that if it looked as if I was just thinking about crossing the street, the traffic would come to a halt. Thinking means at first I was often lost and trying to figure out if I wanted to cross that street.
