Veteran's day.

Woke up at 6:30 and couldn't go back to sleep. So, I listened to the latest podcast from Piotr in Learn Real Polish. He was talking about the three types of people who try to learn a foreign language.

The first person learns some vocabulary words, a few phrases and feels good. Then it becomes more difficult with grammar and their progress slows down. They only look for the end result when they can speak somewhat fluently and don't realize that there are plateaus that everyone hits when progress is very slow for a week or even months. So, they decide the language is too hard and they stop.

The second group continue until they make it to the intermediate level and don't challenge themselves to go further.

The third group knows there will be ups and downs in the learning cycle, accept the fact that at times there will be little progress but keep studying. They don't think too much about the end result because they know it is in the future, when exactly they don't know. I think I'm in this group. I must be. It's been 8 years now learning Polish and still have a long way to go but it doesn't deter me. Yes, it's frustrating at times but I know it will pass and keep on going. Actually, now when the frustration takes over I stop and study Spanish. It's much easier but is more like a hobby for me. Polish is not a hobby, it's a passion.

Today is Memorial day in both of my countries. A day to remember all those who gave their lives and those who survived or served in the military. My father, uncles, brother, nephew, cousins and I served the country we lived in. A few made a career out of it and the rest did not.

Dzień pamiętać wszystkich tych, którzy oddali swoje życie, a ci, którzy przeżyli i służył w wojsku. Mój ojciec, wujkowie, brat, bratanek, kuzyni i serwowane z kraju żyliśmy w. Kilka zrobił karierę z niego, a reszta nie.

  1. Funny, I just listened to that same post yesterday too, after not having gone to that site for a long time! :-) I opened the text in one browser window, and opened the same site in another window using Chrome to translate it into English, and only looked at the English part when I was stumped.
